The Stages of Life or The Three Ages of Man depicts a promontory jutting out over the Baltic Sea at sunset.
There are five human figures looking at five sailing ships on the sea: an old man with a stick, looking at the horizon; a young man and a woman with two children, one of whom is intent on raising a flag of Sweden. Five boats sail in the calm and calm sea: three large, like the three adults, and two smaller ones, like the two children.
