Vincent Van Gogh, when he arrived in the south of France, was immediately attracted by the intense light that enhanced the colors of the wheat. Finally Vincent van Gogh can witness a peasant life full of strength and energy, see a lush countryside and no longer miserable, like the one he knew in Holland.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Sower representing a farmer sowing his field in the Crau plain in Arles in Provence.
The sower at sunset was worked out in June 1888, as we learn from a letter written to his brother Théo: “I had a week of intense and breathless work in the wheat fields in full sun. It resulted in studies of wheat, landscapes and a sketch of a sower. On a plowed field there is a long strip of purple clods of earth and a blue and white sower stands out on the horizon. In the horizon line of the field, short ripe wheat. Above all, yellow sky with yellow sun. From the simple nomenclature of these shades, you can see that color plays a very important part in this composition. "
