Vincent van Gogh painted The courtyard of the Arles hospital where he was admitted from December 1888 to May 1889 after having cut his ear. This is the garden courtyard of the Hotel-Dieu, the old hospital-asylum of Arles.
The director of the hospital, an enlightened person, allowed Vincent van Gogh to continue painting and transform his room into his small studio.
