Vincent van Gogh painted Paul Gauguin's chair in 1888 and in a letter to his brother Theo wrote in December 1888: “Meanwhile, I can already tell you that the last two studies are very strange. ... a wooden and yellow Piceno straw chair on a red brick floor against the wall (day). Then Gauguin's chair, red and green, nocturnal mood, walls and floor also red and green, on the seat two novels and a candle. On canvas and in thick layers ».
Shortly after making the two chairs Vincent van Gogh wrote to Albert-Émile Aurier «A few days before our separation, I tried to paint his empty seat. It is a study of his reddish-brown wooden armchair, with the seat in greenish straw, and - in place of the absent one - a lighted candle and some modern novels ".
