The painting represents the island of San Giorgio Maggiore at dusk, from the south-eastern end of Venice. On the right, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal are faintly visible.

Every evening at the end of November 1908, Claude Monet and his wife took gondola rides to enjoy "these beautiful sunsets that are unique in the world".
