Judith and the Head of Holofernes is considered the first work of the golden period by Gustav Klimt. The painter portrays the protagonist as a modern woman, with the face of Adele Bloch-Bauer, an exponent of Viennese high society.

The head of Holofernes appears just for a glimpse, at the bottom right.

Behind the head of Judith is an archaic and stylized landscape of fig trees and vines, taken from an Assyrian frieze in the Palace of Sennacherib in Nineveh.
