Gustav Klimt's portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer was confiscated by the Nazis together with all the belongings of the Bloch-Bauer family, who had to flee Austria to take refuge in Switzerland. Gustav Klimt's paintings were exhibited at the Austrian Museum Belvedere, in Vienna. In his 1945 will, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer assigned his estate to his grandchildren, including Maria Altmann.
