Vincent van Gogh painted the Starry Night by reproducing a nocturnal landscape of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, apparently just before dawn on June 19, 1889, during the year he was in the psychiatric clinic of Saint- Rémy-de-Provence.
Thus Vincent van Gogh described the subject of the Starry Night to his brother Theo: "a landscape with olive trees and also a study of a starry sky".
