The Stages of Life or The Three Ages of Man depicts a promontory jutting out over the Baltic Sea at sunset.

There are five human figures watching five sailing ships on the sea: an elderly man with a cane, observing the horizon; a young man and a woman together with two children, one of whom was raising a Swedish flag. Five boats sail in the quiet and calm sea: three large ones, like the three adults, and two smaller ones, like the two children.
