Gustav Klimt Print - Fairytale - 1883
Gustav Klimt - Fable
Year: 1883 - oil on canvas cm 117x84
Preserved at: Historisches Museum der Stadt, Vienna, Austria.
Fable was painted by Gustav Klimt for the publisher Gerlach & Schenk, who had started the publication of a series of luxurious volumes entitled Allegories and Emblems.
In a dense forest there is a naked woman with a cloth that slides over her back. The woman impersonates the Fable, which is alluded to by the roll of parchment placed behind her right hand. On the left, a majestic lion sleeps crouched in the foreground and on the branches above the lion some mice play chasing each other; on the right, two storks and a fox.
