The lady portrayed in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, from whom the two names given to the painting "Mona Lisa" and "La Gioconda" derive.
Leonardo da Vinci wanted to keep La Gioconda with him until his death in Ambois in France on 2 May 1519.
The painting was retouched by Leonardo for years and years. It seems that the Mona Lisa is undoubtedly the most famous portrait in history and one of the most famous works of art in the world.
