Leonardo da Vinci - Portrait of Ginevra Benci
Year: 1474-1478 - tempera and oil on panel 36.7x38.8 cm
Preserved at: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, USA.
Leonardo da Vinci painted the portrait of Ginevra Benci, after she married Luigi di Bernardo di Lapo Nicolini in 1474.
Giorgio Vasari saw the work and in the Lives of 1568 he wrote: "[Leonardo da Vinci] portrayed the Geneva of Amerigo Benci as a beautiful thing".
The hairstyle is typical of the last quarter of the fifteenth century in Florence, with the hair gathered at the nape, leaving some curls free to frame the face.
