Claude Monet's painting takes up the famous painting by Édouard Manet, Breakfast on the Grass.
In 1920, the painter tells firsthand what had become of the painting: "I owed the rent to the owner of the house and, not being able to do otherwise, I gave him as a pledge the canvas that he kept wrapped in the cellar. managed to get me the sum necessary to take it back, you will understand that the canvas had had all the time it needed to get moldy ".
In 1884 Claude Monet recovered the canvas, which was originally very large (it seems six meters by four), he cut off the moldy part and kept three fragments, the third of which has disappeared.
