In 1903 Gustav Klimt visited Ravenna twice and was fascinated by the beauty of the Byzantine mosaics, which had a strong influence on the artist.
Gustav Klimt created Water Serpents on parchment, using watercolor, tempera, gold and silver leaf, filling every inch of the surface with minute details, as if the artist were composing the tiles of a mosaic.
