Vincent van Gogh - Vincent's chair with his pipe
Year: 1888 - oil on canvas 73.5x93 cm
Preserved at: National Gallery of London, England.
Vincent van Gogh painted his chair in 1888 and in a letter to his brother Theo wrote in December 1888: «Meanwhile, I can already tell you that the last two studies are very strange. ... a wooden and yellow Piceno straw chair on a red brick floor against the wall (day). Then Gauguin's chair, red and green, nocturnal mood, walls and floor also red and green, on the seat two novels and a candle. On canvas and in thick layers ».
Vincent van Gogh's chair is less elegant than Gauguin's: it is made of raw wood with a straw seat. On it are placed two objects of daily use, the pipe and the tobacco. Vincent van Gogh was notoriously a heavy smoker.
